This 7 Day Cao Bang, Ha Giang and Sapa loop is seven epic days across the very best of northern Vietnam's frontier — from the tranquil waters of Ba Be Lake and the thundering Ban Gioc waterfall in Cao Bang, over legendary mountain passes into the Ha Giang loop, and finally west to Sapa beneath Fansipan, the tallest mountain in Indochina. Day 1 — Hanoi to Ba Be Lake

The 7 Day Cao Bang, Ha Giang and Sapa loop departs Hanoi at 7:30 a.m. through the mountains of Thai Nguyen, stopping in Cho Chu town for lunch before reaching Ba Be Lake — the largest natural lake in Vietnam. A private boat cruise and a swim in its clear waters cap the day, with a night in a Tay homestay at Pac Ngoi village.

Day 2 — Ba Be to Ban Gioc

Day 3 — Ban Gioc to Bao Lac

After a morning boat trip to the falls, the day turns to genuine off-road — crossing streams and conquering the adrenaline-inducing Me Pia pass, with its 14 twists and turns stacked across 2.5 km — before arriving in the small mountain town of Bao Lac.

Day 4 — Bao Lac to Dong Van (Ha Giang Loop)

Cross the DT217 and take a bamboo-raft ferry over the Nho Que River before climbing the legendary Ma Pi Leng pass, around 1,500 m above sea level — the 'King of Passes' with poetic canyon-river views. Explore the historic Pho Bang street of multi-storey clay-brick houses on the way to Dong Van.

Day 5 — Dong Van to Ha Giang (Ha Giang Loop)

Ride to Lung Cu, the northernmost point of the country, and its 34.85 m flag tower, then visit the Palace of the Hmong King and cross the Tham Ma pass and Quan Ba Heaven's Gate, with scenic transitions through clouds and hills and colourful ethnic communities, ending in Ha Giang City — perhaps with a cold beer by the pool.

Day 6 — Ha Giang to Bac Ha

A challenging off-road day through Xin Man and Hoang Su Phi, following the Chinese border — easy roads for roughly the first 100 km, then rugged trails for the last 40 km. Ride through some of the most untouched country in Ha Giang, with gorgeous terraced rice fields, to the market town of Bac Ha (famous Sunday minority market, schedule permitting).

Day 7 — Bac Ha to Sapa

A shorter final ride with a border-gate coffee break near Lao Cai looking across into China, then the spectacular O Quy Ho pass over the Hoang Lien Son range beneath Fansipan (3,142 m), arriving in Sapa at sunset to celebrate the loop with farewell beers.
