Tour Introduction
Sixteen days in the saddle, coast to mountains and back — this is the Northern Loop Vietnam dirtbike adventure in its fullest form.
Riding east to west across the wild far north, this challenging off-road expedition strings together the region's greatest terrain: the terraced valleys of Mai Chau and Son La, Vietnam's highest road over Tram Ton Pass, the colour and chaos of the Bac Ha hill-tribe markets, the raw limestone highlands of Ha Giang, Dong Van and Meo Vac, the serene waters of Ba Be Lake, the border thunder of Ban Gioc Waterfall, and a grand finale on the water at Halong Bay and Cat Ba Island. Along the way you'll cross paths with Flower H'mong, Black Thai, Tay, Lo Lo and Pu Peo communities, sleep in family homestays, and trace historic sites from a French colonial prison to Ho Chi Minh's wartime cave headquarters.
This is a genuine dirt bike tour built for riders who want the trails, not the tourist buses. You'll ride nimble 150cc, 250cc or 300cc manual machines chosen to handle everything the north throws at you — muddy mountain tracks, rocky passes, river crossings and long ridge-top runs. Every stage is fully guided and supported, with accommodation, meals, permits, boat cruises and an English-speaking guide handled throughout, so you can focus on the ride. Come ready for real adventure: this is northern Vietnam, off the beaten track, exactly as it should be ridden.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1 — Hanoi to Mai Chau & Son La
We roll out of Hanoi at 7:30am and trade the city for open country, climbing into the mountains with a stop in the beautiful green valley of Mai Chau — home to Thai stilt-house villages and terraced rice fields — before pushing on to Son La for the night.

Day 2 — Son La to Dien Bien Phu
The trail winds through Black Thai and Meo villages on the way west. In Dien Bien Phu you'll visit the infamous French colonial prison and battlefield museum, where the decisive 1954 battle brought an end to French Indochina.

Day 3 — Dien Bien Phu to Lai Chau
A spectacular riding day past tiered tea plantations and cascading rice terraces. If the timing lines up with a Sunday, there's a chance to wander a bustling local market before reaching Lai Chau.

Day 4 — Lai Chau to Sa Pa
The highlight is the climb over Tram Ton Pass — at 1,900 metres, the highest road in Vietnam — with sweeping views toward Fansipan. You finish with a trek down to a homestay in the Giay village of Ta Van, deep in the Muong Hoa valley.

Day 5 — Sa Pa to Bac Ha
Today is timed for the famous weekly hill-tribe markets, alive with the colour of the Flower H'mong in their vivid embroidered dress. It's one of the most vibrant cultural experiences in the entire north.

Day 6 — Bac Ha to Ha Giang
A big full-day ride through the remote highlands of Sin Man and Hoang Su Phi, where terraced hillsides climb thousands of feet and you'll meet a rich mix of ethnic groups along little-travelled mountain trails.

Day 7 — Ha Giang to Dong Van
Deep into limestone country on the Dong Van plateau, with a stop at the former H'mong king's palace at Sa Phin — an atmospheric residence tucked among the karst peaks near the Chinese border.

Day 8 — Dong Van to Meo Vac
A short but unforgettable stage that takes in the Lo Lo and Pu Peo settlements and the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass, before looping back via the Yen Minh shortcut. Sheer cliffs, an emerald river far below, and world-class views the whole way.

Day 9 — Ha Giang to Ba Be Lake
An early start carries you east through rolling hills and quiet valleys to Ba Be National Park, where you'll settle into a warm Tay family homestay in Bac Ngoi village on the lakeshore.

Day 10 — Ba Be Lake
A well-earned day off the bikes. Cruise down the Nang River by boat, glide through the dramatic Puong Grotto cave, and visit the tumbling Dau Dang Waterfalls in one of Vietnam's most beautiful freshwater lake settings.

Day 11 — Ba Be Lake to Cao Bang
A relaxed half-day ride through gorgeous mountainous landscapes and terraced farmland, easing north toward the border town of Cao Bang.

Day 12 — Cao Bang to Lang Son
A ride rich in history: visit Pac Bo cave, Ho Chi Minh's 1945 headquarters on his return to Vietnam, and pass through Dong Khe on the way to the frontier market city of Lang Son.

Day 13 — Lang Son to Halong Bay
Explore Lang Son's lively central market before making for the coast. At Halong Bay you'll board a traditional junk cruise, with cave visits, swimming and kayaking among the towering limestone karsts.

Day 14 — Halong Bay to Cat Ba Island
A full day on the water, cruising deeper into the bay's maze of limestone mountains and hidden lagoons before reaching Cat Ba Island for the night.

Day 15 — Cat Ba Island to Tam Coc
Visit the wartime hospital cave in Cat Ba National Park, then take a speedboat to Hai Phong and continue to Tam Coc for the night.

Day 16 — Tam Coc to Hanoi
A gentle final day: a boat trip through the karst waterways of Tam Coc — the "terrestrial Halong Bay" — plus a bicycle ride through the countryside and a visit to the ancient imperial temples of Hoa Lu, before returning to Hanoi and the end of the adventure.
