Tour Introduction

This Offroad Sapa Motorbike Tour is a nomad-style expedition across the wild north of Vietnam, weaving dirt tracks through jungles, over high mountain passes and past waterfalls all the way to the legendary hill station of Sapa. Over eight days you'll ride some of the country's most stunning and creative off-road routing — from the stilt-house valleys of Mai Chau and the dinosaur-backbone ridge of Ta Xua to the terraces of Mu Cang Chai, the earthen houses of Y Ty and the misty peaks above Sapa.

Just as memorable as the riding are the people you'll meet along the way. This Offroad Sapa Motorbike Tour rolls through remote villages of Thai, Green H'mong, Dao, Muong, Ha Nhi, Black H'mong and Red Dao communities, with homestays, local performances and rice-wine welcomes woven throughout. Fully supported with a motorbike, gear, fuel, an English-speaking guide and a train ride home, it's built for adventurous riders who want to see northern Vietnam from the saddle — and off the beaten track.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1 — Hanoi to Mai Chau Valley (160 km)

The Offroad Sapa Motorbike Tour rolls out of Hanoi at 9 a.m. on westbound dyke roads into Hoa Binh province, riding through paddy fields and limestone karst and over the Thung Khe mountain pass to the Mai Chau valley. The evening brings a local performance and shared rice wine at a Thai stilt-house homestay.

Distance: 160 km · Meals: Lunch, Dinner · Stay: Thai homestay (house-on-stilts)

Day 2 — Mai Chau to Bac Yen (160 km)

After a morning village walk watching local life and weaving, you'll ride to Moc Chau — a tea-producing highland town with a dairy heritage — then take Road 43 and cross the Da River by the Van Yen ferry to Bac Yen. The route passes through areas of Green H'mong, Dao, Thai and Muong communities.

Distance: 160 km · Meals: B, L, D · Stay: Guesthouse

Day 3 — Bac Yen to Mu Cang Chai (180 km)

A spectacular day of zigzag and spiral roads climbing Ta Xua peak (around 2,600 m) through wild flower-filled landscapes, reaching the famous 'narrow backbone of the dinosaur' with clouds rolling beneath. You'll then cross the historic Lung Lo pass — used in the 1954 Dien Bien Phu campaign — and ride Road 32 into the Mu Cang Chai massif with its panoramic northern views.

Distance: 180 km · Meals: B, L, D · Stay: Hotel

Day 4 — Mu Cang Chai to Y Ty

Ride toward the mighty Fansipan range via Than Uyen and Binh Lu in Lai Chau, with an optional challenging back route featuring river crossings, before climbing the Tram Ton pass — Vietnam's highest road pass. You'll reach Y Ty, nestled beneath the 2,700 m Nhi Cu San mountain, to see the Ha Nhi people's terraced fields and distinctive mushroom-shaped earthen houses.

Route: Mu Cang Chai – Than Uyen – Tram Ton Pass – Y Ty · Meals: B, L, D · Stay: Y Ty homestay

Day 5 — Y Ty to Sapa (160 km)

A high-altitude day crossing over 2,000 m in Lao Cai province via Lung Po and Muong Hum, with panoramic views of the main mountain range, before descending into the Sapa valley. Once the French 'Summer Capital of Northern Vietnam', Sapa is famous for its rugged scenery and cultural diversity.

Distance: 160 km · Meals: B, L, D · Stay: Hotel, Sapa

Day 6 — Sapa Village Sightseeing

A trail-riding day out of Sapa through gardens and pine forest, across rice paddies with spectacular scenery, to the Black H'mong village of Ma Tra and the Red Dao village of Ta Phin. Along the way you'll visit a local school and walk among the region's two largest ethnic communities.

Route: Sapa – Ma Tra – Ta Phin – Sapa · Meals: B, L, D · Stay: Hotel, Sapa

It's a genuine nomad-style adventure through dirt, jungle, mountain and mist.
