Tour Introduction

Chase the Offroad Ta Xua Dinosaur Spine on this four-day adventure from Hanoi into the wild mountains of the Northwest. Built for riders who want the real thing, the route tackles challenging curvy, muddy roads and dirt tracks — with 15% to 60% off-road riding depending on the day — through limestone mountains, river valleys and high plateaus, all the way to the legendary 'dinosaur's backbone' ridge of Ta Xua Peak.

Beyond the riding, this Offroad Ta Xua Dinosaur Spine tour is a journey into the remote highland cultures of northern Vietnam, staying in Muong, Thai and H'Mong homestays and rolling through villages of eleven different ethnic groups around Tram Tau. From the Da River valley and Mai Chau to the Muong Lo rice terraces and Nghia Lo, every day pairs breathtaking scenery with authentic local life — fully supported with bikes, gear, fuel and an English-speaking guide, so you can focus on the trail and the spine.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1 — Hanoi to Mai Chau (170 km)

Departing Hanoi at 8:30 a.m., the Offroad Ta Xua Dinosaur Spine tour heads northwest on countryside roads that trace the Da River. You'll pass rice fields, Muong and Thai villages, limestone mountains and the scenery of Da River Lake, with the first taste of off-road (15–30%) easing you into the trip. The day ends with a warm village homestay.

Distance: 170 km · Off-road: 15–30% · Meals: Lunch, Dinner · Stay: Village homestay

Day 2 — Mai Chau to Ta Xua Peak (180 km)

After a homestay breakfast and a morning village walk, you'll climb through Mong villages and over the French-built Hua Tat pass, cross the Moc Chau plateau and the Da River Lake, and weave along the twisting QL37. The prize is Ta Xua Peak — at 2,865 m Vietnam's tenth-highest — and its famous 'dinosaur backbone' ridge, with the chance for some dirt-track exploration. Off-road climbs to 25–40% today, and the night is spent in a H'Mong stilt-house homestay.

Distance: 180 km · Off-road: 25–40% · Meals: B, L, D · Stay: H'Mong stilt-house homestay

Day 3 — Ta Xua to Nghia Lo via Tram Tau (150 km)

The most off-road day of the tour (30–60%). It opens with a dirt-track village exploration before you ride a newly-opened shortcut from Ta Xua to Tram Tau — a region of eleven ethnic groups, high mountains and deep ravines, at altitudes of 390–800 m. There's an optional soak at the Tram Tau hot spring and sweeping views over the Muong Lo rice terraces before arriving in Nghia Lo around 5:30 p.m. for a hotel night.

Distance: 150 km · Off-road: 30–60% · Meals: Lunch, Dinner · Stay: Hotel, Nghia Lo

Day 4 — Nghia Lo back to Hanoi (220 km)

A leisurely morning before the ride home. The route rolls through the Muong Lo valley — tea plantations, terraces and villages, with dirt-track detours for one last hit of off-road — before turning back toward Hanoi, timed to beat the rush-hour traffic and close out the Offroad Ta Xua Dinosaur Spine adventure.

Distance: 220 km · Off-road: variable · Meals: Included · End: Hanoi

Trip facts: 4 days · Hanoi – Mai Chau – Ta Xua – Tram Tau – Nghia Lo – Hanoi · 15–60% off-road depending on the day · bikes, gear, fuel & guide included (mechanic for groups of 6+). B = Breakfast, L = Lunch, D = Dinner. Routes may vary with weather and season.

Tour Conclusion

In just four days, the Offroad Ta Xua Dinosaur Spine tour delivers the very best of northern Vietnam's off-road riding — the Da River valley and Mai Chau, the French-built Hua Tat pass and Moc Chau plateau, the weaving QL37, the remote shortcut to Tram Tau, the Muong Lo rice terraces, and the unforgettable dinosaur-backbone ridge of Ta Xua Peak at 2,865 metres. With 15% to 60% off-road each day, it's a genuine dirt adventure rather than a sightseeing loop.

Every kilometre is fully supported — motorbike, gear, fuel and an English-speaking guide included, with a mechanic on larger groups and an optional support van — so you can concentrate on reading the trail. If you want to ride the famous dinosaur spine and the wild country around it, this is the trip.
