Tour Introduction

Twelve days. The full sweep of the north. One legendary adventure bike.

This is the complete Tenere 700 Northern Vietnam Adventure — a grand loop that pulls together nearly every road worth riding above Hanoi and finishes on the water at Halong Bay. You'll cross the cloud-drowned valley of Tà Xùa, the golden terraces of Mu Cang Chai, the alpine passes above Sapa, and the raw highland drama of the Ha Giang Loop, home to the world-class Ma Pi Leng Pass. Then it's on to the serene expanse of Ba Be Lake, the thundering border waterfall at Ban Gioc, and a grand finale aboard a five-star cruise through the limestone islands of Halong Bay.

Your machine for all of it is the Yamaha Tenere 700 — the rally-bred adventure bike built for exactly this terrain. Light and flickable through tight mountain switchbacks yet planted and confident on long highland sweepers, the T7 lets you ride passes like Ma Pi Leng at your own rhythm and cover the big days in comfort. Every stage is fully supported and led by local guides who know these roads by heart, with quality hotels and lodges, all meals, fuel, permits and a backup vehicle handled from the welcome dinner to the farewell cruise. Built for intermediate riders ready to step up, this is northern Vietnam, coast to summit, exactly as it should be ridden.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 0 — Welcome to Vietnam

Arrive in Hanoi and settle in, with an airport pickup and transfer to your hotel in the heart of the Old Quarter. In the evening you'll meet the tour team and fellow riders over a welcome dinner, run through the route, and get acquainted with your Yamaha Tenere 700. Overnight: The Ryder Lodge Hanoi.

Day 1 — Hanoi to Mai Chau (via Ninh Binh) · 254 km

We roll out of Hanoi and make for Ninh Binh, where limestone towers rise straight out of the rice fields, before turning toward the mountains. The road opens into flowing countryside curves as the terrain lifts, delivering you to the peaceful green valley of Mai Chau — a beautiful first night among stilt-house villages and hill-tribe farmland. Overnight: Mai Chau Ecolodge. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 2 — Mai Chau to Tà Xùa · 161 km

A committed climbing day into serious mountain country, with challenging passes and long sweeping bends carrying you ever higher. High peaks ring the valley of Tà Xùa, forever wrapped in dense drifting cloud — you finish above the cloud line for one of the most atmospheric overnights on the whole loop. Overnight: Tà Xùa Ecolodge. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 3 — Tà Xùa to Mu Cang Chai · 171 km

The route strings together viewpoint after viewpoint as it crosses plateau and mountain range, with terraced rice fields cascading down every slope. Flowing bends and forest corridors make for pure riding pleasure, ending among the famous golden terraces of Mu Cang Chai — most magical in the low evening light. Overnight: Nắng Hotel. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 4 — Mu Cang Chai to Dien Bien Phu · 241 km

A long, rewarding highland stage through remote countryside and dramatic passes. The day ends in the historic basin of Dien Bien Phu, where war memorials and museums tell the story of one of the 20th century's decisive battles, framed by green hills. Overnight: Mường Thanh Grand. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 5 — Dien Bien Phu to Sapa · 268 km

The biggest riding day climbs through high, fog-shrouded passes — among the most dramatic and demanding roads of the trip, where dense mountain mist rolls across the tarmac. The reward is Sapa: cool alpine air, terraced valleys spilling in every direction, and views toward Fansipan, the "Roof of Indochina." Overnight: KK Sapa Hotel. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 6 — Rest Day in Sapa · 0 km

A well-earned recovery day. Explore Sapa's markets, viewpoints and terraced valleys on foot, take an optional short ride, or simply relax while the bikes are cleaned and serviced ahead of the Ha Giang Loop. Overnight: KK Sapa Hotel. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 7 — Sapa to Ha Giang · 156 km

You glide down out of the alpine passes through pine forest and farmland before the road opens onto broad valley runs. Terraced hills and the first jagged limestone ridges announce Ha Giang province — the wild heart of the north, and the gateway to the legendary loop ahead. Overnight: Yen Bien Luxury, Ha Giang. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 8 — Ha Giang to Meo Vac · 190 km

The signature Ha Giang Loop stage, and one of the greatest riding days in Vietnam. You climb onto the Dong Van plateau through narrow limestone corridors before reaching the crown jewel — the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass, carved into sheer cliffs high above the emerald Nho Que River. Take it slow and savour it. The day ends in the valley charm of Meo Vac. Overnight: Mông Lodge, Meo Vac. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 9 — Meo Vac to Ba Be · 190 km

Leaving the high plateau behind, the pace eases through rolling valleys and riverside stretches as sharp karst gives way to greener hills. The day closes at Ba Be Lake — ranked among the world's twenty most beautiful natural freshwater lakes — where optional boat trips and cave visits await beneath forested mountains. Overnight: Ba Be Lakeside Bungalow. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 10 — Ba Be to Ban Gioc · 190 km

Calm mountain roads and terraced farmland lead through quiet borderland country to Cao Bang. The reward is Ban Gioc Waterfall — one of the largest cross-border waterfalls on the planet, thundering wide between cliffs and green terraces on the frontier with China. An evening near the falls is cool and unforgettable. Overnight: Sai Gon Ban Gioc Resort. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 11 — Ban Gioc to Ha Long · 347 km

The longest and final riding day trades borderland hills for broad coastal plains, with open curves and big-sky countryside easing you toward the sea. Then it appears — the limestone islands of Halong Bay rising from emerald water on the horizon, a fitting finish to nearly 2,200 kilometres in the saddle. Overnight: Ha Long Essence Hotel. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 12 — Halong Bay Cruise · 0 km

Trade two wheels for the water with a five-star cruise through UNESCO-listed Halong Bay. Glide between towering limestone karsts, explore hidden caves and quiet lagoons, and raise a glass to the ride as the bay drifts past. The perfect end to a grand northern adventure. Overnight: Ambassador Cruise. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch.
