Tour Introduction

Some rides you take. This one takes you.

Our 14-day Vietnam Big Bike Tour is the definitive way to experience the far north — a 2,145 km loop that links the cloud-wrapped ridges of Tà Xùa, the terraced amphitheatres of Mu Cang Chai, the legendary switchbacks of Ma Pi Leng Pass, and the emerald calm of Ba Be Lake before rolling out to the limestone seascape of Ha Long Bay. It is a route built for real machines and real riders: long sweeping curves, high mountain air, and roads that reward a bike with genuine torque underneath you.

Whether you saddle up for the agile, do-anything character of a Tenere 700 Vietnam Tour, every stage is chosen to make the most of the ride. You'll climb through pine passes, drop into borderland river valleys, thread past Hmong, Tày and Nùng villages, and pull over where the view demands it — not where a schedule tells you to. Fully supported, expertly guided, and open to intermediate riders ready to step up, this is northern Vietnam as it should be ridden: on two wheels, at your own pace, with the whole mountain range in front of you.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Hanoi to Mai Chau · 140 km (4–6 hrs)

We ease out of Hanoi and let the city fall behind, trading traffic for open country as rice paddies and river valleys widen around the road. Past Hoa Binh the corners loosen and the elevation begins to build, with stilt-house hamlets and terraced foothills climbing the slopes on either side. The day settles gently into the green bowl of Mai Chau valley, where cool mountain air makes the perfect first-night reward.

Day 2 — Mai Chau to Tà Xùa · 130 km

A committed climbing stage that lifts you into the high country. The road unspools along long ridgelines through misty forest, opening onto panoramas that seem to run forever. Ridge-top pull-offs frame clouds pouring between the peaks, and by evening you're parked above the cloud line in Tà Xùa itself — a dramatic finish to a genuine mountain day.

Day 3 — Tà Xùa to Mu Cang Chai · 210 km

Down into rolling valleys, then back up into terrace country on a route stitched together from forest corridors and soft, flowing bends. Remote villages pass in a blur of woodsmoke and waving children as the hills fold into ever-tighter layers. The payoff is Mu Cang Chai's vast staircase of rice terraces, glowing gold in the late light as you arrive.

Day 4 — Mu Cang Chai to Dien Bien Phu · 200 km

A big, remote mountain stage through districts few tourists reach. Dramatic passes, deep valleys and everyday village life set the rhythm as the road sweeps through high-elevation corridors. You descend at last into the historic basin of Dien Bien Phu, ringed by green hills that hold a lot of history.

Day 5 — Dien Bien Phu to Sapa · 250 km

The route climbs hard into pine-clad passes and towering mountain walls — cool air, clean lines, and long sweeping curves that are pure big bike territory. As Sapa nears, the terraced valleys spread open into some of the most breathtaking panoramas in the country. A long, satisfying day in the saddle.

Day 6 — Sapa · Free Day (0 km)

A well-earned rest after several hard mountain stages. Explore Sapa's viewpoints, terraces and markets on foot, or take an optional light loop through the surrounding hills for relaxed, unhurried riding. It's also the ideal window to clean and service the bikes before the second half of the expedition.

Day 7 — Sapa to Ha Giang · 250 km

You glide out through pine forest and farmland before the road opens onto broad valley runs. Terraced hillsides, wide river plains and the first jagged limestone ridges announce that Ha Giang province — the wild heart of any Vietnam big bike tour — is drawing close.

Day 8 — Ha Giang to Dong Van · 150 km

The climb through the mountain towns of Quan Ba and Yen Minh pulls you into deeper, stranger limestone country. Passes narrow and grow more theatrical, unfurling views across rugged rock plateaus that stretch to the border. Dong Van's towering karst peaks make for an atmospheric, otherworldly overnight.

Day 9 — Dong Van to Bao Lac · 180 km

Today you ride the legend: Ma Pi Leng Pass, carved into sheer cliffs high above the emerald ribbon of the Nho Que River. Tight, committed bends and flowing ridge-top lines deliver world-class riding that lives up to every bit of its reputation. The descent toward Bao Lac softens into green valleys and quiet riverside villages — the perfect exhale after the day's headline act.

Day 10 — Bao Lac to Ban Gioc · 90 km

A shorter, scenic day over gentle passes and rolling borderland terrain — relaxed riding that lets you soak it all in. The reward arrives with real drama: Ban Gioc Waterfall, wide and thundering, framed by cliffs on the frontier with China. An evening beside the falls is cool, fresh and unforgettable.

Day 11 — Ban Gioc to Ba Be Lake · 155 km

Calm mountain districts, terraced farmland and forested valleys line a route made of smooth, big-bike-friendly bends and constant scenery. The day closes at Ba Be Lake — a vast sheet of blue cradled by tall green mountains, and one of the most serene overnights on the whole loop.

Day 12 — Ba Be Lake to Lang Son · 220 km

Leaving the lake behind, you roll through soft, rolling countryside and low mountain passes. The landscape shifts steadily through rural plains, rice valleys and limestone hills until the bustling markets and karst towers of Lang Son signal your arrival into rich borderland culture.

Day 13 — Lang Son to Ha Long · 170 km

The final ride trades borderland hills for the broad coastal plains, with wide curves and open-country views easing you toward the sea. Then it appears: the limestone islands of Ha Long rising from the water on the horizon. Salt air and shimmering light bring 2,000-plus kilometres to a triumphant close.

Day 14 — Ha Long · End of Tour (0 km)

A slow, easy morning by the bay — time to unwind, take photographs and let the ride sink in before a final regroup and farewell briefing. Fourteen days, one unforgettable machine, and the whole of northern Vietnam behind you.
