Tour Introduction

This is the grand tour of the north — thirteen days, 2,145 kilometres, and every legendary road worth its salt strung into a single unforgettable loop.

Our Northern Vietnam Grand Adventure is built for riders who want the full mountain range and a serious machine underneath them. From the cloud-line ridges of Tà Xùa to the golden terraces of Mu Cang Chai, the alpine passes above Sapa and the sheer, cliff-hanging switchbacks of Ma Pi Leng, this route is one of the most complete Vietnam big bike tours you can ride. It ends where every northern epic should — among the limestone islands of Ha Long Bay.

Your machine for the journey is the Yamaha Tenere 700 — the rally-bred adventure bike that was made for exactly this terrain. Light, agile and endlessly capable, it flicks through tight mountain switchbacks and settles into long highland sweepers with equal ease, giving you the confidence to ride roads like Ma Pi Leng at your own pace. This is a true Northern Vietnam Tenere 700 Adventure: every stage fully supported, guided by locals who know these roads by heart, and timed to let the scenery — and the riding — breathe. Hotels, homestays, meals, fuel, permits and a backup vehicle are all handled. Intermediate riders ready to step up are welcome. Your only job is to twist the throttle and take it all in.

Vietnam Big Bike Tours: 13-Day Northern Grand Adventure — Dien Bien to Ha Long

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Hanoi to Mai Chau · 140 km

We slip out of Hanoi and let the capital dissolve into open country, rolling past rice paddies and river valleys on gentle, warm-up curves. Terraced villages climb the slopes as the road tips upward, and the day settles into the peaceful mountain basin of Mai Chau — cool air, quiet valley, the perfect first night.

Day 2 — Mai Chau to Tà Xùa · 130 km

The climbing begins in earnest. Forested ridgelines and long sweeping curves lift you into high country, where cloud pours across the slopes and the views open wide. You finish above the cloud line in the high-altitude village of Tà Xùa — a spectacular reward for a proper mountain day.

Day 3 — Tà Xùa to Mu Cang Chai · 210 km

Down through remote ethnic villages and forested passes, the route winds steadily into terrace country. Woodsmoke, waving children and folding green hills set the rhythm before you arrive at Mu Cang Chai's iconic staircase of rice terraces — most magical when they catch the low evening light.

Day 4 — Mu Cang Chai to Dien Bien Phu · 200 km

A long, rewarding highland ride through remote countryside, with mountain corridors and expansive vistas at every turn. Few tourists reach these districts, and the sense of space is enormous. The day closes in the historic basin of Dien Bien Phu, cradled by green hills that carry a lot of history.

Day 5 — Dien Bien Phu to Sapa · 250 km

The road climbs hard through pine-covered passes into cooler, cleaner alpine air — long sweeping curves that are pure big bike territory. As Sapa nears, terraced valleys unfold into some of the most breathtaking panoramas in Vietnam. A big, satisfying day in the saddle.

Day 6 — Sapa · Free Day (0 km)

A well-earned rest after several hard mountain stages. Wander Sapa's viewpoints, terraces and markets on foot, or take an optional light loop through the surrounding hills. It's also the ideal moment to clean and service the bikes before the second half of the adventure.

Day 7 — Sapa to Ha Giang · 250 km

You glide out through pine forest and farmland before the road opens onto broad valley runs. Terraced hillsides and the first jagged limestone ridges announce Ha Giang province — the wild, dramatic heart of any northern Vietnam big bike tour.

Day 8 — Ha Giang to Dong Van · 150 km

One of the most scenic riding days in all of northern Vietnam. The route threads through limestone corridors and terraced valleys, past ancient villages set beneath towering karst peaks. Every bend seems to reveal a bigger, stranger, more beautiful view than the last.

Day 9 — Dong Van to Meo Vac · 25 km

Short in distance, unforgettable in every other way. Today you ride the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass, where vertical cliffs drop sharply into the deep emerald valley of the Nho Que River. Tight, committed bends and world-class ridge-top views make this the crown jewel of the whole trip — take it slow and savour it.

Day 10 — Meo Vac to Ban Gioc · 250 km

Gentle valley roads carry you through rolling borderland terrain on a long, scenic stage. The reward arrives with real drama: Ban Gioc Waterfall, thundering wide between cliffs and green terraces on the frontier with China. An evening near the falls is cool, fresh and unforgettable.

Day 11 — Ban Gioc to Ba Be Lake · 150 km

Calm mountain corridors, terraced fields and forest-lined valleys make for smooth, big-bike-friendly riding all day. The route ends at Ba Be, where rivers, lakes and forest meet in perfect harmony — a serene sheet of blue framed by tall green mountains.

Day 12 — Ba Be Lake to Lang Son · 220 km

Leaving the lake behind, you roll through rural valleys and highland routes as the landscape shifts steadily toward borderland character. Limestone hills and the bustling markets of Lang Son signal your arrival into a region rich with frontier culture.

Day 13 — Lang Son to Ha Long · 170 km

The final leg trades borderland scenery for broad coastal plains, with open curves easing you toward the sea. Then it appears — the limestone islands of Ha Long rising from emerald water on the horizon. Salt air, shimmering light, and 2,145 kilometres brought to a triumphant close.
